About Respiratory Therapist Jobs

Respiratory therapists treat, care, and evaluate patients suffering from breathing problems and other cardiopulmonary disorders. Most respiratory therapy jobs are in hospitals, and professionals can expect to work under direct supervision of doctors in many different locations within the hospitals, including the intensive care unit, emergency room, long-term care, and walk-in clinics.

Salary Outlook

Respiratory therapy jobs are on the rise, with expected growth of 21% by 2018. The average wage of a respiratory therapist in 2008 was $52,200, with an average salary range between $44,500-$61,720. There are approximately 122,000 respiratory therapy professionals in the United States.

Educational Requirements

All respiratory therapists are required to have an associates degree, and a Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) certification. Students can also enroll for their bachelors in respiratory therapy. Community colleges, universities, medical schools and vocational schools, and the military offers training as well. Students can expect to graduate with their associates degree in two years, while bachelors degrees take four. Expected areas of study while in school include anatomy, physiology, chemistry, physics, microbiology, pharmacology, and mathematics.

Roles and Responsibilities

As a respiratory therapist, professionals work with all spectrums of the population, from premie infants with under-developed lungs, to the elderly fighting lung disease. Respiratory therapists also treat patients suffering from heart attacks, stroke, drowning, asthma, and emphysema. Respiratory therapists work closely with physicians, and are primarily charged with the responsibility of planning therapeutic treatments, and diagnosing respiratory problems. They have a high level or responsibility to the patients, as they will care for severely ill patients in intensive care units or people on life support. Respiratory therapists supervise respiratory technicians, and are often called upon for their expertise by attending physicians. This job requires a high level of attention to detail, and excellent people skills and team working abilities.
