Respiratory Therapists work closely with patients who are experiencing lung and breathing problems. This can include post-trauma or surgery as well as long-term sufferers of lung diseases such as emphysema, cystic fibrosis and asthma.
Respiratory Therapists work in Hospitals, Emergency rooms, Home care, Nursing homes and Doctor’s offices. They can also be found working with Asthma and Smoking Cessation programs and Sleep Study centers. The patients worked with include premature babies, pediatric, and adults. Many patients being transported by ambulance or air will need the attention of a Respiratory Therapist.
The employment outlook for Respiratory Therapists is expected to be very good since the middle-age and elderly population is increasing.
Responsibilities of a Respiratory Therapist
Respiratory therapists decide a treatment program for patients based on a doctors’ prescription. They prepare, test and maintain mechanical equipment as required. This equipment includes those for oxygen therapy, aerosolized medicine, humidity therapy and chest physiotherapy required for mucus removal and to prevent congestion after anesthesia.Their normal responsibilities also include monitoring the patients’ response to therapy by assessing vital signs and blood gas and blood chemistry levels. Maintaining charts and doctor consultation are required responsibilities.

Hourly- $19.59 – $32.13

Most Respiratory Therapist have obtained a 4-year Bachelor’s Degree. These graduates may then sit for the Certified Respiratory Therapist exams followed by the Registered Respiratory Therapist tests for added certifications.
Another option is to obtain a 2-year Associate of Applied Science or Associate of Science degree.
