What Respiratory Therapists Do

Respiratory therapists are important members of any health care team. They administer therapy to patients with breathing disorders and cardiopulmonary problems. Respiratory therapists evaluate and diagnose their patients, and may perform physical examinations to a certain degree. Respiratory therapists always work under the supervision of a physician. They work in both home care and in hospital settings, and use a wide array of equipment, medications and training to help patients. Respiratory therapists may also be responsible for educating their patients on the machinery and medication the patients will use.

A minimum of an associate’s degree (two years college training in the field) is required. This minimum training is offered by two- and four-year universities, medicals schools, vocational schools, and through Military Service. While some programs train for entry-level R.T. jobs, most programs train students to become advanced respiratory therapists. Respiratory therapists are accredited by passing the certified respiratory therapist exam (CRT); subsequent exams may accredit individuals as registered respiratory therapists (RRT). RRTs have higher earning potential, and may be considered more attractive hires on account of the deeper knowledge and experience. Some programs also offer Master’s degrees as well.
In training, respiratory therapists can be expected to study the following subjects (if not more): anatomy, physiology, chemistry, microbiology, pharmacology, mathematics, and pathophysiology.
