Career Information

A respiratory therapist works under the supervision of a physician. The responsibilities are to deliver respiratory care to patients who have breathing problems, or any other cardiopulmonary conditions. Diagnostic tests and limited physical examinations will be required in order to evaluate the patients.

Educational Requirements

In order to work as a respiratory therapist, you must have at least an associate’s degree, although most schools offer the bachelor’s degree also. Students must take science related courses including human anatomy, physiology, physics, and microbiology. Students also must learn about diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, medical record keeping, patient assessment, and reimbursement. In order to work as a respiratory therapist in the United States (excluding Hawaii and Alaska) you must pass your CRT (Certified Respiratory Therapist) exam. Most employers also require you to be certified in CPR.

Personal Requirements

You must also have certain personality traits if you want to be a respiratory therapist. You must be able to pay attention to detail, work on a team, follow instructions, and use a computer. You must be prepared to treat people of all ages, from infants to the elderly. You must have good communication skills so you can properly communicate with the doctor to set up a treatment plan for the patient.
