Job Description of a Respiratory Therapist

A respiratory Therapist works in tandem with physicians, providing respiratory therapy to patients, from infants to the elderly. Their job focus is on disorders of the pulmonary and cardiovascular system. Under the supervision of a physician, a respiratory therapist’s responsibilities include:

Evaluating a patient.
Provide diagnostic testing to access the patient’s needs.
Maintain airways of patients,
Provide care in emergency situations.
Develop a method of therapy for a patient.
Provide the patient with the therapeutic treatments, evaluate their progress, and make any necessary changes to their respiratory therapy plans.
Provide information to the patient and their families for lifestyle modifications.
Assist the physician as needed.

Respiratory Therapists work in settings such as hospitals, clinics, sleep labs, doctor’s offices, rehabilitation centers, home health care, and in educational settings.

Job Requirements

In order to become a respiratory therapist a two or four year degree is required. There are even Master’s degrees that are available for this position. The position requires someone that enjoys working with patients. They must be able to work on a computer, be organized and work well with others.

Educational Requirements

An associates or bachelors degree is required. Education can be obtained at universities, vocational schools, and medical schools. Classes will focus on science, anatomy, microbiology, physics, biology and medical terminology. There will be in depth training regarding such things as patient care, therapeutic care, and other clinical practices. Upon graduation all states, except Hawaii and Alaska, require that a Certified Respiratory Therapist Exam is taken in order to be accredited.
