About Respiratory Therapist Jobs

Respiratory Therapists are in one of the many medical fields which require a high level of contact with patients. These patients include neonatal, pediatric and adult. They can also be involved with patient monitoring and care during transport by ambulance and air.

Respiratory Therapists work in Hospitals, Home care, Nursing homes, Chronic Care, Asthma and Smoking Cessation Programs as well as in Emergency Rooms, Doctors’ offices and Sleep Study Centers.
Employment opportunities in the field are expected to be favorable due to increased middle-aged and elderly populations.

Average Salary for Respiratory Therapists

$40,840 – $56,160. Respiratory Therapist jobs usually include medical, dental and vision insurance as benefits.

Education

A 2-year Associate of Applied Science or Associate of Science degree is the minimum required education. Most Respiratory Therapists earn a 4-year Bachelor’s Degree. After graduating, you can sit for the Certified Respiratory Therapist exams. Two further tests are available to become a Registered Respiratory Therapist.

Responsibilities of a Respiratory Therapist

Respiratory therapists ascertain the treatment of patients based on doctors’ orders. They prepare and maintain mechanical devices as required. Their responsibilities include monitoring the patient’s response to prescribed therapy via vital signs, blood gas and blood chemistry testing. Consultation with doctors and maintaining the patient’s charts are also daily duties.

The equipment they use includes those for oxygen therapy, aerosolized medicine, humidity therapy, chest physiotherapy for mucus removal and congestion prevention.
