About Respiratory Therapist Jobs

Respiratory therapists (RTs) work to assess and treat patients with breathing disorders and cardiopulmonary issues, such as asthma, lung diseases, and the respiratory components of strokes and heart attacks. Their patients range in age from premature infants to the elderly, and they work in physicians’ offices, nursing homes, as well as in many areas of hospitals. An increasing number of RTs travel to work in patient homes. A respiratory therapist must be capable of sound judgment, attention to detail, be proficient with computers, and have a strong ability to work on a team.

Education

Training and earning an associate degree is a minimum requirement for a respiratory therapist. Individuals who earn a bachelors or masters degree will improve employment options, salary, and opportunities for advancement. The National Board for Respiratory Care grants a Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) credential to those who complete accredited programs and pass the Certified Respiratory Therapist Examination. Alaska and Hawaii are the only states that currently do not require respiratory therapists to be licensed. Respiratory therapy programs include classes in:

Cardiac Rehabilitation
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
Chemistry
Diagnostic Procedures and Tests
Disease Prevention
Guidelines for Clinical Practice
Human Anatomy and Physiology
Mathematics
Medical Recordkeeping and Reimbursement
Microbiology
Pathophysiology
Patient Assessment
Pharmacology
Physics
Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Responsibilities of Respiratory Therapists

Respiratory therapists work under the supervision or direction of a physician, and they are responsible for all issues related to respiratory care. This includes the supervision of respiratory technicians. They gather patient information and conduct necessary physical examinations, as well as perform duties including administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation, oxygen, and drugs to the lungs. Other functions include the evaluation of blood samples to determine alkaline or acid levels, or gas and oxygen concentrations, the measurement of lung capacity, and the connection and monitoring of ventilator equipment.

Salary Outlook for Respiratory Therapists

The salary in this occupation will vary by state, and the level of education and experience. Generally though, a respiratory therapist can expect to earn from just under $40,000 yearly, up to almost $70,000 a year, with the median salary being approximately $55,000 a year.
