Michigan Respiratory Therapy Schools

About Respiratory Therapist Jobs

Over the years, chronic lung problems such as asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease have steadily increased not only in numbers of adults affected, but also by the numbers of young people becoming affected. Without proper care, patients can eventually suffer from strokes and heart attacks. Therefore, demand for qualified respiratory therapists is on the rise in hospitals and clinics throughout Michigan.

A respiratory therapist in Michigan can expect to work in intensive-care units, emergency rooms, operating rooms, sleep diagnostic facilities, and labs focusing on lung and cardiac care. Depending on skill and location, a respiratory therapist in Michigan can expect to earn between $42,000 and $60,000 per year.
Responsibilities of a Respiratory Therapist

A respiratory therapist plays a critical role in opening the patient’s airway both during medical procedures, and as a general duty in prolonged patient care. A respiratory therapist must have the knowledge and ability to deliver oxygen into patient’s lungs by any means feasible using up-to-date technologies and critical thinking.

This is a hands-on position. As a main responsibility, a respiratory therapist must have the ability to administer intravenous applications of aerosolized drugs, draw and interpret arterial blood gas, perform arterial insertions, and introduce tracheal tubing into the patients oral cavity.

Educational Requirements

In Michigan, a respiratory therapist must earn an associate’s or bachelor’s degree from an educational program accredited by the Commission of Accreditation for Respiratory Care. Graduates must pass an exam administered by the National Board for Respiratory Care in order to gain recognition for entry level employment in hospitals and clinical care facilities.

Many graduates interested in greater professional earning potential continue their education to become a certified respiratory therapist. Typically, this is earned after establishing ability with work experience. A CRT may specialize in a particular functional area such as neonatal and pediatric care.
