What is a Respiratory Therapist?

The respiratory therapist is a well trained member of the medical staff who assists patients with respiratory problems. The patients can be infants or adults; all the way to geriatric patients. The therapist is trained in the use of special equipment and medication that will relieve the respiratory distress of the patient in a manner that also makes the patient confident and comfortable; no matter if the setting is a local hospital or a doctor’s office.



Qualifications of a Respiratory Therapist

The respiratory therapist is one who:

  1. Has a CRT license that allows him or her to practice the trade.
  2. At least 2 years of training in an accredited program for respiratory care. This is the equivalent of an AA degree in respiratory treatment.
  3. Preferably a BA with a CRT exam score
  4. Definitely an MAT in the respiratory care field is a benefit and will assist with a higher salary.

  1. Anatomy
  2. Practice in respiratory therapy techniques (equipment, technology, applications).
  3. Biology
  4. Pharmacology
  5. Methods for pediatics and geriatrics
  6. Overall patient care

The training time for the trade is anywhere from two to 6 years with ongoing seminars and workshops to update in the latest methods, techniques and technologies.

A respiratory therapist does not only need technical training for the care of the patients, but also:

  1. Good team effort in terms of flexible scheduling of treatments.
  2. Patient needs vary so consideration needs to be given to each individual situation.
  3. Sensitivity to patient medical problems related to breathing,. pain, effects of the treatment.
  4. Willingness to earn to use latest techniques and equipment.
