Roles and Responsibilities

The role of a Respiratory Therapist is to work with the patient in helping their breathing or heart problem. Some common procedures they do is to perform chest physiotherapy, analyze blood for carbon dioxide and/or oxygen levels, administer drugs to the lungs, administer oxygen, or evaluate lung capacity.

They work with lung cancer patients, premature infants, heart attack patients, stroke victims, or even patients with asthma. On many occasions a Respiratory Therapist will conduct counseling for smokers to give them options to quit smoking.
