Respiratory Therapists are in great demand. It is noted in the medical field that the estimated increase in open positions for Respiratory Therapists over the next six years will be approximately 19%. Respiratory Therapists work with patients of all ages from infants to the elderly. Respiratory Therapists help to treat patients that have respiratory diseases, emphysema, have suffered the affects of a heart attack, stroke or have had a drowning experience. There are many conditions and injuries where a respiratory therapist is called to work on a team with a doctor and nurse in order to come up with the best plan for a patient’s case.

Schooling for Respiratory Therapists

Formal schooling is necessary to become a Respiratory Therapist. You will need at least two years of schooling and an Associate’s Degree as well as a passing grade on any necessary exam as established by the certification laws in your state. If you do wish to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree it will help to open doors for you that you would otherwise not have the opportunity to go through. The more highly educated you are, the more job oportutnities you will have and the more likely you will be to get promoted and advance in your position and career.

While you are in school you will need to take a wide variety of science classes as well as classes that will prepare you for your position as a Respiratory Therapist. Some of the classes that will take will include:

Human Anatomy Pharmacology
Chemistry Therapeutic and Diagnostic Procedures and Tests
Microbiology Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
Physics Respiratory Health Promotion
Mathematics Disease Prevention

Your certification will be based on whether or not you fulfill the requirements as indicated by the National Board for Respiratory Care. If you are fortunate enough to be completing a course of study that is endorsed by the Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care and have attained a passing grade on all the necessary tests and exams then you become certified.
