Los Angeles Respiratory Therapy Schools
About Respiratory Therapist Careers in Los Angeles
Being a respiratory therapist can be both financially and morally rewarding. There is great demand in the healthcare industry for well-trained and educated respiratory therapists and that means that there are a lot of open positions just waiting for the right person to come along. It also means that annual salaries will be competitive, and companies will make aggressive offers to the potential employees they think will be a great asset to their business including great benefits. The Bureau of Labor Statistics is estimating the job market for respiratory therapists will continue to grow at a faster than average pace nationally, and that means plenty of opportunity for a new respiratory therapist.
In the greater Los Angeles area, there is an extreme need for respiratory therapists as there are dozens of high-tech hospitals and designated respiratory care clinics that are needing more and more therapists as the median age in the US continues to rise and more and more people are being diagnosed with respiratory illnesses and diseases. Another sector of the Los Angeles respiratory care sector is home health care, and it’s rapidly growing in the southwest US. Wherever you imagine yourself working as a respiratory therapist, you can do it in Los Angeles.
Required Education for a Respiratory Therapist
Most open respiratory therapist positions require at least an Associate’s Degree in Respiratory Care, and a passed Certified Respiratory Therapist Exam. This exam is moderated by the National Board for Respiratory Care, and having that two-year education will help greatly in passing this exam. Many school’s also offer Bachelor’s Degree programs in Respiratory Therapy for those wanting to advance their career or start at a higher position or salary. Any respiratory care program will include classes in at least the following subjects:
Science (including anatomy and biology)
Practicum (first hand educational training)
Core Classes (math, history, English, etc.)
Responsibilities of a Respiratory Therapist
Your job as a respiratory therapist is to work closely with doctors and nurses, as well as carry out your own physicals of patients, to correctly diagnose respiratory ailments and diseases. Once you have diagnosed the problem, you would then administer the correct treatment to improve the patient’s condition and overall well-being. You would also be required to follow up with doctors, nurses, and patients to make sure that improvement is being made and make any adjustments to treatment based on subsequent events. Depending on your exact work environment, you may work with children, the elderly, and anyone in between.
