Charlotte Respiratory Therapy Schools

About Respiratory Therapy Jobs

Respiratory therapists help people with breathing problems so they can continue to breathe normally. They work with doctors and other medical professionals to establish patient care plans. In addition to that, they also perform diagnostic testing and they are responsible for making decisions about providing care for patients on life support and patients in intensive care.

Only 1% of respiratory therapists have a high school education or lower, so schooling for respiratory therapists is important. Respiratory therapists need at least an associates degree. Schooling is divided between coursework and supervised clinical experiences. Subjects covered during courses include anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology and microbiology, chemistry and pharmacology, physics and mathematics, diagnostic and therapeutic tests and procedures, medical devices and equipment, assessing patients and documenting progress, cardiopulmonary rescusitation and rehabilitation, clinical practice guideline usage, caring for patients at home, promoting respiratory health and preventing disease, and medical records and insurance. Supervised clinical experiences give potential respiratory therapists the opportunity to work in the settings they’ll be working in once they’re done with their training. In addition to education programs offered at schools, there are also opportunities for respiratory therapists to become licensed, which is required by many states.

Respiratory therapists have many responsibilities. They include interviewing patients and performing examinations, conducting diagnostic tests, documenting patient information and progress, reporting results to doctors, responding to emergency and critical care situations, visiting patients in their homes to provide and maintain equipment, treating patients by different means such as drugs, physiotherapy, and use of medical devices and equipment, and educating patients in self-care and use of equipment.

Salary Outlook
