About Respiratory Therapist Careers

More and more people in the US are being diagnosed with respiratory and cardiopulmonary conditions every day and those people not only need a doctor’s care, but the care of a respiratory therapist as well. Demand for this trained healthcare field will only increase over the next decade as the median age for US citizens raises steadily with the aging baby boomers, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates a faster than average job growth from 2010 to 2019. If you enjoy working with people, and helping those people in the best way you can to feel better and live more fulfilling lives, then becoming a respiratory therapist might be just the career move you’ve been looking for.

To be able to help your patients the best you can, and to make sure that you can pass the Certified Respiratory Therapist Exam that is administered by the National Board for Respiratory Care if you need to have at least an Associate’s Degree from an accredited school. Passing this certification exam with a two-year degree shouldn’t be a problem for most potential respiratory therapists. Many schools that offer an Associate’s Degree in respiratory care also offer a Bachelor’s Degree for those who are looking for advancement in their current career as a respiratory therapist. Your education in respiratory care will most likely include at least the following courses:

Emergency Care
Job Preparation

Responsibilities of a Respiratory Therapist

Most respiratory therapists work in large hospitals or surgical centers where they treat patients young and old. They are required to confer with doctors and nurses about patients’ care involving respiratory conditions and illnesses and they help to determine the best course of respiratory therapy for each individual patient. A respiratory therapist must also be able to complete physical exams directly related to respiratory care and diagnose possible causes and problems along with the patient’s doctor. You would also be required to check in on patients and with their doctors regularly to monitor changes in conditions and alter the course of treatment regularly if needed. There is a great deal of responsibility involved in being a respiratory therapist – this career choice is a challenging one but it can also be a very rewarding one.
