About Respiratory Therapist Jobs

Respiratory therapists, also called respiratory care practitioners, assess and treat patients with breathing disorders. Examples of these types of disorders include bronchitis, asthma and emphysema. They are also required to treat patients with breathing disorders due to illness or injury e.g. patients who have suffered a heart attack or stroke. Respiratory therapists work under the direction of a physician and are typically found in emergency rooms, operating rooms and intensive care facilities. Most respiratory therapists work in hospitals but they can also be employed in testing labs, physician offices, nursing homes and respiratory clinics. They work with patients of all ages, from premature babies to the elderly. In Texas, the average annual salary for a respiratory therapist is $53,000.

Education

Respiratory therapists need to be licensed in all States with the exception of Alaska and Hawaii. The minimum requirement, to apply for licensure, is a high school diploma and the successful completion of an accredited respiratory care program. A bachelor’s degree provides advanced training and options for certification. In addition, most employers expect the respiratory therapist to hold a CPR certification. Certification is offered by the National Board for Respiratory Care and is divided into two levels according to the level of education. The Certified Respiratory Therapist credential is the entry-level certification and the Registered Respiratory Therapist credential is at the advanced level. Certification is dependent on the successful completion of a credentialing examination.

Responsibilities of a Respiratory Therapist

A respiratory therapist is responsible for interviewing patients, conducting tests and physical exams to ascertain the right therapy for each patient. Some important job functions include analyzing tissue and blood samples to test the levels of oxygen, utilizing airway devices and ventilators to help patients breathe properly and educating patients and families. They treat patients with oxygen, chest physiotherapy and medications. Respiratory therapists need to be skilled at handling hazardous equipment. They are required to work with gases stored under extreme pressure and therefore, need to be able to adhere to strict safety and maintenance standards. They typically work 35 to 40 hours per week and need to stand for long periods of time.
